Any anime that features characters whose names are drawn from scholars who have made an impact on the contemporary world desrves praise. Some of the shadowy powers-that-be have the names Derrida and Lacan. With a pair of robot assistance called Deleuze and Guitarri
With names drawn from post-struturalist thinkers such as Deleuze and Guitarri, for a pair of robots. And the famed French scholar Derrida – known for his work on Deconstructionism, and Lacan, the well-known psychoanlast. We know we’re in for something out of the ordinary.
The story presented over the first four episodes establishes many elements of a dystopic SF thriller. Evoking the android-hunting/cop thriller of Bladerunner, Ergo Proxy deals with an investigation into an infection causing robots to go rogue. A dark and foreboading mood saturates the piece. And the morbid main character Re-L is a determined, if somewhat spolit investigator.
Unconventional robot designs – none of the metallic surfaces of a droid, but the bulky frame of an army-grunt, or lithe form of a female fashion-model.
Closing credit music from Radiohead’s ‘Paranoid Android’ aptly conveying the stylish, yet brooding, mood of the piece.
At a design element, Ergo Proxy features a combination of 2D digital cell animation, 3D computer modeling and digital special effects.
Convergence, old media and new media.
