This anime of music and a young band starting out in the music scene raises to questions:

1. is this the Elvis effect? or
2. is this a celebration of the power and influence of rock/pop music?

That is, is this Japanese wrong-headed exploitation of Western-based music (copy and fantasy), or is it a creative, respectful celebration?

The Elvis effect – for critics of Elvis: Exploitation of original culture. A white performer with more money exploits original Black artists and music culture. Is the same thing going on here?

No, the guys here have really done their homework: there are tons of music influences for the west. And what is most interesting is that this Japanese vision of youth music doesn’t attempt to replace its western origins with the Japanese version, but instead offers a really interesting hybrid composition – singing in English (with os educated Japanese) and a main character who develops a deepening appreciation of American and UK rock and pop. This show offers genuine characters with heart and music.

Music is Life
Beck begins the compelling story of a boy who discovers who he is through music. A teenage boy meets an amazing guitar player and together they form the band Beck. Follow the bands ever-challenging road to fame, as told through the eyes of the impressionable boy.
